Optometrists play an important role in your eye health

From 40 onwards, it is normal to experience changes in your vision. You are also at much higher risk of certain eye conditions. While many of these changes or conditions can be easily treated, often you won’t know if you have a serious eye condition, and if left untreated can lead to permanent vision loss. Symptoms to look out for at 40years old onwards

  • Blurred text and the need to read the newspaper either at arm’s length or very close to your eyes to see clearer
  • Poor concentration, eye strain, headaches or tiredness from reading or other close work
  • Any unusual changes that may be affecting your eyesight or ability to go about your normal life. Warning signs include spots in your vision, sudden eye pain or redness, distorted and double vision and regularly bumping into or spilling things.

We detect, diagnose and treat eye health and conditions that affect vision. We can also identify general health conditions that are first detected via an eye examination, provide referrals to eye surgeons (ophthalmologists) and often help manage post-eye-surgery health. For all your family, optometrists can help you ensure you maintain good vision for life.

Eye examinations can also reveal serious health concerns on occasion.

What happens in an eye exam

As optometrists we examine all part of your vision and eye health. A full eye health examination includes:

  • A thorough case history
  • Internal eye examination eg Screening for Cataract, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Macular Degeneration and etc
  • External eye examination
  • A test of how clearly you see
  • How well your eyes work together as a team
  • How well you see colour

What if we find a vision problem

If we detect problems, we may recommend glasses, contact lenses, eye exercises, prescription eye drops or even referral for eye surgery.

Many serious eye conditions don’t have obvious symptoms. Some eye diseases only show symptoms when the condition is advanced and difficult, or even impossible, to treat.

A comprehensive eye exam provides the full assurance of good vision and eye health that a quick vision check or a school vision screening cannot. If you don’t already have an optometrist you don’t need a referral to book an exam.

Screening for Cataract

Cataracts are cloudy areas that form in the clear lens inside the eye. This cloudiness results in poor vision in the same way that a dirty window scatters light.

Screening for Cataract

Screening for Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a condition in which the nerve cells which transmit information from the eye to the brain become damaged and prevents visual information from getting from the retina in the eye to the brain.

Screening for Diabetic Retinopathy

For those with diabetes changes may occur and damage the retina at the back of the eye. The risk of developing retinopathy increases with the length of time you have had diabetes

Screening for Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is damage to the macula. The macula is the part of the retina responsible for sharp central vision
